5 Things to Do Near Hartsville, SC (That Your Family Will Actually Remember)

Most families arriving at Standing Pines have never heard of Hartsville, SC. That’s part of the charm. This small Pee Dee town has a big heart — green spaces, a waterpark, fishing on Prestwood Lake, and even the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. It’s the kind of place that surprises you. And once you start exploring what’s within 20 minutes of our front gate, you might start wondering why you ever fought crowds somewhere else.

Hartsville SC

1. O’Neal Farms — 3 Minutes This one’s practically in our backyard, and it’s our guests’ favorite surprise. Four generations of family farming, miniature cows, donkeys, chickens, and fresh produce. Not a tourist attraction — a real, working farm that welcomes visitors. Kids who’ve never left a city come back different after an hour here.

2. Neptune Island Water Park — 15 Minutes Slides, a lazy river, splash zones — everything your kids have been negotiating for since you left the driveway. Seasonal, so check hours before you go. Pairs beautifully with a low-key evening back at camp.

3. Coker University — 15 Minutes Don’t let the college campus fool you — this is a genuine community gem. Beautiful grounds, public arts events, theater performances, and NCAA Division II athletics. Great option for an evening out that feels a little more grown-up.

4. Campbell McLeod’s Antique Museum at McLeod Farms — 20 Minutes Free admission, seven days a week, and genuinely impressive. Tucked next to the McLeod Farms Roadside Market, this collection includes over 20 antique cars — a 1920 McLaughlin, a 1930 Lincoln, classic Model T’s — plus vintage farm equipment, phonographs, butter churns, and a wood cook stove. Kids think it’s a treasure hunt. Adults lose track of time. Grab some homemade ice cream from the market next door before you head back.

5. Darlington Raceway — 20 Minutes The Track Too Tough to Tame. Even if you’re not a NASCAR fan, the history here is something else. Tours are available, and the museum tells the story of American racing in a way that hooks even the skeptics in your group.

Honorable Mentions — Worth the Extra Drive

🌲 Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge — 45,000+ acres of protected longleaf pine forest with hiking, wildlife viewing, and some of the best bird watching in the region. A quiet morning here resets something in you.

🌲 Sandhills State Forest — Less visited than the Wildlife Refuge next door, which means more peace and more wildlife. Great for hiking, fishing, and getting genuinely off the beaten path.

⛰️ Sugarloaf Mountain — A surprisingly rewarding climb for families. The view at the top earns the bragging rights.

🏙️ Florence, SC — 30 Minutes — Florence punches well above its size. The Florence County Museum is free, genuinely engaging, and has interactive exhibits kids actually want to touch. Lynches River County Park has a treetop canopy walk, kayak launch onto the SC Revolutionary Rivers Trail, and a summer splash pad. Downtown has a full sculpture trail, the Francis Marion Performing Arts Center, and a dining scene with serious range — barbecue, farm-to-table, craft beer, and more. Extended stay guests especially love having a real city this close, without the chaos of a major metro.
