The Big Performance
Welcome back to the wonderful world of the Forest Friends! Today, Peace and Quiet help Blossom solve a problem.
Blossom scrambled for the barn, getting out of sight fast. Then she heard a familiar “whoof.” Peace and Quiet were walking their humans toward the low ropes course!
The humans stopped when they saw the scattered trash—chip bags, candy wrappers, an overturned container.
“Oh no, look at this mess,” the woman said, picking up wrappers.
“Kids must have left this,” the man agreed, gathering trash.
From under the barn, Blossom’s mind raced. The humans didn’t understand about the wild raccoons or that animals could get sick from human food!
Peace and Quiet’s ears perked up. Something was under that barn…
“Psst! Peace! Quiet!” Blossom whispered.
Both dogs’ ears shot straight up, listening carefully.
“The wild raccoons made this mess,” Blossom explained quietly. “They ate human food and got sick. Your humans need to build secure trash cans here. Can you show them why it matters?”
Peace looked at Quiet. Quiet looked at Peace. This could be fun!
Peace trotted to Blossom’s scratches in the sand and began sniffing dramatically.
“Peace, what are you doing?” the woman called.
Quiet joined in, both dogs making a huge show of discovering something. They sniffed loudly and pawed at the ground.
Then Peace pretended to eat whatever he’d “found,” chewing with his mouth open and making awful smacking sounds.
Quiet added extra slobber for effect.
“What did you boys find?” the man asked, walking over.
That’s when the real performance began.
Peace flopped onto his side with a dramatic thud. He rolled over, paws in the air, tongue hanging sideways. Drool dripped everywhere.
“WOOF,” he moaned. “Wooooof.”
Quiet added gagging sounds and created a drool puddle in the sand. His tongue hung out and his eyes danced even he as rolled on his back in the sand.
“Oh no! Are you two okay?” Both humans rushed over.
“What could they have eaten?” the woman asked.
The man examined the ground and noticed the strange scratches in the sand—neat lines and measurements.
“Look at this,” he said. “This looks like a design.”
The woman studied the scratches, then looked at their “sick” dogs, then back at the scattered trash.
“Wait. What if animals made this mess? What if they keep finding trash here and eating it?”
“Hey—I’ve got an idea,” the man said. “These two will eat anything. What if we put secure trash cans here? The kind with latches that need thumbs to open?”
The woman smiled. “Perfect! And maybe some seating? Parents could keep an eye on kids and make sure they throw trash away properly.”
“Exactly!” The man pulled out his phone to photograph the area and the mysterious scratches. “We could build it right here.”
Under the barn, Blossom held her breath.
Peace and Quiet jumped up, tails wagging, all signs of “sickness” gone.
“Well, that was fast,” the woman laughed. “Guess you’re feeling better!”
“Come on, you drama kings,” the man chuckled. “Let’s head home.”
As the family walked away, Blossom smiled from her hiding spot. Her plan had worked perfectly. Soon there would be secure trash stations, and everyone—wild animals, pets, and humans—would be safer and happier.
Family Discussion and Activity Time:
- Talk about working together: How did Blossom, Peace, and Quiet cooperate to solve the problem?
- Discuss communication: Peace and Quiet found a creative way to help their humans understand. Can you think of other ways animals communicate with people?
- Practice problem-solving: If you couldn’t use words to explain something important, how would you show someone?
- Learn about dog hearing: Dogs hear much better than humans! Peace and Quiet heard Blossom’s whisper from far away.
- Observe teamwork: Watch for examples around the campground of people and animals working together safely.
Remember, when we work together and pay attention to each other, we can solve big problems!
